Sample lesson plan for a program on
Trees and Forestry

 

AGE: first graders
PROGRAM LENGTH: 1 3/4 hours
LOCATION: Combination of open area and woods
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn the basic needs of trees, the importance of trees in the ecosystem, and will begin to identify common trees of the area through games, songs, and a forest hike.

 

1) Greeting and introduction to the program 15 minutes
   
2) Game: “Every tree for itself”        30 minutes
Students portray trees and have to meet their basic needs to survive and thrive.
 
3) Game: Tree ID relay

20 minutes

   
4) Tree Bingo forest hike 30 minutes
Students fill bingo cards based on tree characteristics and functions identified while on an interpretive walk
   
5) Sing-along: “My Roots Go Down” 5 minutes
   
6)Lesson summary 10 minutes
